Spiritual Training

When I was young, I was a “why” machine.  I wanted to know why things worked the way they did.  I wanted to know why I should or should not touch something.  I wanted to know why I was required to do things the way my dad said.  Many times my dad would answer my “why” with “because I said so.”

Submission to parental authority is important but “why” is not a dirty word.  Teach your children “why” you read your Bible each day.  Tell them “why” you pray for them and how you pray.  Make sure you tell them “why” you want them to know Jesus.  An eternity in heaven is a valid reason but unpack the many other benefits of salvation.  Explain righteous living and why that is necessary.  Teach them what love is and how to demonstrate patience. Demonstrate the value of personal devotions in your own life as well as in their lives.  The best method is to teach them, show them, and do it with them.

The responsibility to raise our children to love the Lord and live a life surrendered to His will is a daunting task.  I still pray every day that God will help me not mess up my kids too badly. Resources make this challenging responsibility somewhat easier.  Below are a few of my notes from Sunday evening and resources to help you as you deal with the “whys” of your children.
